GRAMMA'S PONDERANCES
Amelia our favourite Heron
It had been a long trip. Amelia had left the Caribbean for her northern adventure to Canada. Amelia knew her journey was the opposite of the human species at this time of year. They looked for warmth, crazy drinks and warm waters, however Amelia had heard of this new restaurant featuring multi colored fish located in a small Ontario town and she couldn’t wait to visit. Her cousin Frederick, the white-bellied heron, didn’t want to travel to some remote Country called Canada. He had heard everyone lived in cold drafty homes called igloos and you had to work for your meals by ice fishing, whatever that was.
Before leaving on this adventure Amelia had her slaty (commonly known as gray with a slight azure blue color flight feathers) touched up but decided she was happy with her red brown thighs, and was pleased with her nearly white face and a pair of black plumes just above her eyes to the back of her head. No need to go to the spa for this trip.
Amelia was proud of her weight of 7.9 lbs, a little heavier than Frederick but then he never ate properly, too many sweets and not enough protein. All of Amelia’s friends were envious of her length of 54 inches and her wingspan of 79 inches. Sometimes she would be confused with the great
Egret but she knew she was larger and her legs are yellow whereas her cousin Susie Egret has black legs.
Amelia had a variety of likes and dislikes when it came to food. Leopard frogs were kinda stringy but tasty, salamanders were a favorite, however turtles were just too easy to catch. For sure rats and ground squirrels, even though Frederick loved them, were just too much work.
Amelia loved small and sometimes large colored fish and she knew just where to find them. Amelia could fish in deeper waters but she preferred shallow waters less that 20 inches deep. Not too much work, just hover over the water to pick up her prey. Diving head first into the water or alighting on water feet first it didn't matter to her as long as she could eat as much as she wanted and as long as she wanted.

Trying to shoo her away just made the adventure more fun. As she flew by Linda’s and Andrea’s windows she was sure they were too amazed at her size to figure out her destination.
There was no one in sight so the banquet was on. Amelia did have a chuckle when Shannon, not much bigger than her, tried to tell her she had to eat in the dining room or bar, however Amelia thought that would give the diners just too much entertainment.
